Youth Service

Rick van Adelsberg

YOUTH SERVICE Director 2016 - 2017

YOUTH SERVICE encourages youth involvement in local community service programs, as well as, developing a global understanding of dynamic changes in our world today. Rotarians organize activities promoting literacy, personal health, integrity, family, and respect for the natural environment. Rotarians believe this avenue of service is vital for sustaining our community, and the Marin County environment.

The Rotary Club of Novato Sunrise (RCNS) vision supports academic

development, community engagement, and the pursuit of a meaningful

professional career.

LAWS OF LIFE ESSAY CONTESTThe Laws of Life Essay Contest offers middle and high school students the opportunity to express the values that are important to them, through an emphasis on reflection and writing.  Participants write essays to identify the laws of life which mean the most to them. The "laws of life" are the rules, ideals, and moral principles by which we live. Literally hundreds of such laws exist - some are so clear that almost all people can agree that these laws are true.  For instance, honesty and compassion rank as universal values in all cultures and societies, regardless of beliefs.

In their essays, students are encouraged to explain their choices by offering examples of experiences they have had, lessons they have learned, and people who have made an impact on their lives.  The Laws of Life program is unique because the best essays are not necessarily written by the students with the best grades, but by the students who can best express what is in their heart. Any student can participate without respect to class standing or grade point average. But ultimately, Laws of Life is about concerned adults in a community working together to support, honor, and publicly recognize young people who reflect upon good character and values.

Last year, the RCNS read over 500 essay's from Novato students. At the conclusion of the contest, the Sunrisers acknowledge the winning students, teachers, and parents at our award ceremony.

READ ACROSS AMERICA - Rotarians serve as reading tutors for children, and adult students. We participate in reading Dr. Seuss books for students at Lynwood Elementary School.  Rotarians build bookcases, donate reading books,

and serve as volunteer reading tutors.

DICTIONARY PROJECT - In collaboration with two Novato Rotary clubs, we provide a hard-bound, personal dictionary for every third grader in Novato. The Rotary dictionary program includes the Novato Unified School District (NUSD), and parochial schools in Novato.

ST. VINCENT'S SCHOOL FOR BOYS - On Memorial Day weekend, the Rotary Club of Novato Sunrise sponsors the American Crown Circus in Marin County---the funds helps support the work of St Vincent's School (off Marinwood exit). The school provides education, counseling, and housing for at-risk boys. Many of these boys come from abusive homes, and foster care detrimental to normal youth development. Thank you Marin County, we look forward to seeing you Memorial Day weekend 2013 --- at the CIRCUS.
